Autumn Term

Autumn Term Part Two~ Nov-Dec 2015

Go With the Flow.

This term we are studying water and rivers. To start our topic we have visited Ashford Water treatment centre and studied some key features of local rivers.

Also as part of this unit of work the children worked in teams to design and build bridges. They could choose what sort of bridge to make. We looked at famous structures from the UK and around the world, and then considered what features we would need to make it strong and stable. Here are some pictures of our work below.

Autumn Term Part One ~ Sept-Oct 2015

News and Journalism

This half term we have been studying News and Journalism. We have looked at how news is presented, how it is adapted to different audiences, and how this has changed over time.

The children have

  • created photo stories, sharing news through pictures
  • used IT skills to create and edit pages
  • designed a 'News in Brief' page for on-line access to news (see below)
  • written scripts for news that will be broadcast
  • researched stories in teams with designated sub-editors, photographers and reporters
  • recorded a radio show
  • written an article for a class newspaper
  • kept up to date with current events and discussed the issues from these stories

To end the topic the children have produced a class newspaper (out soon!) and had a special visit from Emma Britton who hosts the Breakfast Show for BBC Somerset. The children were able to ask her questions about her job, her career path and the skills she needs. She told them about some of the people she has interviewed as well as what happens when things go wrong! The children played their radio programmes to her and she gave them encouragement and tips for the future. Emma also helped the children with the questioning skills. It was a great morning and the children enjoyed meeting her. Watch out for some budding reporters, technicians or presenters from Class 5!

We even got a mention on her show the next day!
The children have been using IT to create news website pages. These are designed to be quick and handy places to find the current top stories, and they have included hyper-links if you want to find out more! Check the children's use of IT below.

“By working together in an exciting, creative and supportive Christian environment we will challenge and inspire every child to become highly literate, numerate, sociable and healthy, with a thirst for continued learning and a belief in their ability to become significant citizens”
